Dr. Gamboa has training in molecular biology and bioinformatics. His main research interests include molecular biology and evolution, bioinformatics, and genomics. He is also interested in software development and microbiome research.

Before joining CUNY SPH as a postdoc, Dr. Gamboa completed his PhD and MSc degrees in biological science at the Center for Scientific Research of Yucatan (Mexico) where his work focused on the isolation and functional analysis of stress-related genes in papaya plants. His work also included the study of the molecular evolution of stress-related genes across multiple genomes and the transcriptome of tropical plants in response to abiotic stress.
