The CUNY Institute for Implementation Science in Population Health is seeking to hire a post-doctoral fellow to work on the Together 5,000 (T5K) cohort study as well as AMETHST (American Transformative HIV Study).

T5K was a US national cohort study of 5,000 HIV-negative gay and bisexual men, and transmen and transwomen who have sex with men. Participants were followed from 2017-2022, completing annual surveys as well as self-administered at-home HIV testing (samples returned to a lab for analysis). Half the sample were men of color, and nearly 2,000 were between the ages of 16 and 24 at enrollment. Now that assessments are complete, dissemination of longitudinal data from the project are a key task ahead. Post-doctoral fellows will need to have experience managing and cleaning longitudinal data, repeated measures analyses, survival analysis, and statistical methods to accommodate time-varying confounders.

Co-led by Dr. Christian Grov (CUNY) and Dr. Adam Carrico (Univ. Miami), AMETHST will launch recruitment in summer 2022. This study will include a new cohort of 5,000 sexual minority men, 3000 of whom report recent methamphetamine use at enrollment. Half of participants will be men of color. Participants will perform at-home HIV testing as well as provide rectal swabs for STI and indicators of rectal immune health. In FY3-5, we will test the efficacy of a contingency management + motivational interviewing intervention to enhance PrEP uptake and reduce methamphetamine use. It is anticipated that the Post-Doctoral Fellow working on this project would assist with study launch and dissemination of baseline data.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to embark on their own independent research careers in a similar field of study. Individuals will have the opportunity for mentorship from investigators at ISPH as well as the CUNY-Einstein-Rockefeller Center for AIDS Research (CFAR)—including CFAR funding opportunities.

The Research Associate (Post-Doctoral Fellow) will report to the CUNY Principal Investigator (Dr. Christian Grov) as well as the Executive Director of ISPH (Dr. Denis Nash), both established investigators with research track records. This is a 1-year position with the potential for additional annual appointments pending the availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

Core duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide analytic support on planned priority analyses from T5K and AMETHST.
  • Conduct independent research using T5K and AMETHST data by proposing, analyzing, drafting, and publishing first-authored papers in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present T5K and AMETHST analyses at relevant scientific meetings and conferences.
  • Assist AMETHST Data Management team with developing and maintaining data codebooks.
  • Collaborate with T5K and AMETHST team members to track, support, and facilitate data analysis proposals by outside investigators.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Encouraged opportunities for career advancement include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and advances independent research agenda, under the guidance of Drs. Grov and Nash.
  • Collaborate with other Institute investigators and external partners on new grant proposals and existing research projects;
  • Participate in Institute Investigator and Research-in-Progress meetings.
  • Apply for at least one funding opportunity; for example, NIH supplements to the parent project or CFAR early-stage investigator funding.
  • Mentor T5K and AMETHST junior team members as well as CUNY SPH students

Doctoral Degree in a related field, demonstrated research ability, strong quantitative skills, including longitudinal data and repeated measure analysis.

The ideal candidate has a record of research on HIV/AIDS or sexual health with Gender/Sexual minority populations. They must have exemplary data analysis skills (quantitative required, qualitative preferred) and ideally experience managing and analyzing longitudinal datasets (evidenced via first authored publications in peer-reviewed journals).

Position will be open until filled. Submit a cover letter and CV to Dr. Christian Grov [email protected]
