SUMMARY:A.J. Jacobs - author\, lecturer\, journalist\, and human guinea pig\, to give the October CUNY SPH Grand Rounds lecture - Battling Truth Decay: Communicating nuance in a world hooked on fast factoids
DESCRIPTION:A. J. Jacobs will discuss his noteworthy experiences communicating ideas that are unusual\, and maybe even unpopular. Drawing on guiding texts including the Constitution\, the Encyclopedia Britannica\, the Bible\, and George Washington’s “110 Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation\,” (#98\, Drink not nor talk with your mouth full neither Gaze about you while you are a Drinking) he will share his perspectives on how to build up public consensus and excitement about science.A.J. Jacobs is an author\, lecturer\, journalist\, and human guinea pig. He has written four New York Times bestsellers combining humor\, science\, memoir\, and a dash of self-help. He is also editor at large at Esquire magazine\, columnist for Mental Floss magazine\, and a commentator on NPR. He has written for The New York Times\, New York magazine\, Dental Economics magazine which is one of the top five magazines about the financial side of tooth care\, and Entertainment Weekly. He has made appearances on shows such as Oprah\, The Today Show\, Conan\, The Colbert Report\, Good Morning America\, CNN\, The Dr. Oz Show\, and given several TED talks. Jacobs is also a periodic commentator on NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday\, dispensing world-shaking historical trivia\, including segments on 19th century lawmakers who spat chewing tobacco in their opponent’s faces. Jacobs grew up in New York City. His father\, a lawyer holds the world record for the most footnotes in a law review article (4\,812). His wife works for a highbrow scavenger hunt called Watson Adventures. He lives in New York with his family. He was also the answer to 1-Down in a New York Times crossword puzzle. \n\n\n\nThis lecture will be on the CUNY SPH campus\, no livestream option will be available. All registrants should RSVP.

SUMMARY:Regression Methods for Respondent Driven Samples: An Application to Young Adults Using Prescription Opioids Non-medically in New York City
DESCRIPTION:Speakers\n\n\n\nAshley Buchanan\, DrPH\, is an Associate Professor of Biostatistics in the Department of Pharmacy Practice\, University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy \n\n\n\nGabrielle Lemire\, MS\, is a Research Associate and Data Analyst in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Rhode Island. She is a graduate of the Masters of Science in Statistics program at Montana State University where she worked on HIV research in the Mathematical Sciences department. \n\n\n\nSummary\n\n\n\nOften the populations who are at highest risk of negative health outcomes\, such as HIV/AIDS\, are the hardest to reach through traditional survey methodology. Recent innovations in survey methods\, particularly the use of respondent-driven sampling (RDS)\, have allowed researchers to better understand marginalized populations. Although RDS leverages the underlying social network structure within these communities to recruit individuals into the study\, these same network structures pose challenges to using traditional statistical methods to analyze these data. Our talk will provide an overview of what RDS is\, why it is useful\, and dive into the burgeoning literature on performing statistical analyses with RDS. In particular\, we consider a regression model in the context of a recent respondent-driven sample of young adults using heroin and prescription opioids non-medically in NYC. We seek to better understand factors associated with young adults in NYC expressing interest in treatment for opioid use disorder but not currently in treatment. Understanding risk and protective factors related to such gaps is useful for public health decisions focused on increasing access to treatment for opioid use disorder. \n\n\n\nMeeting details\n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting here. \n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 453 444 1666Passcode: 1234

SUMMARY:CUNY SPH Grand Rounds. The effect of preconception-initiated low-dose aspirin on hCG pregnancy\, pregnancy loss\, and live birth: per-protocol analysis of a randomized trial
DESCRIPTION:Grand Rounds Lecture \n\n\n\nAshley Naimi\n\n\n\nAssistant Professor of Epidemiology\, University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health\n\n\n\nVideo available here. \n\n\n\nDr. Ashley Naimi’s research falls at the crossroads of causal inference\, social epidemiology and human reproduction. Dr. Naimi develops and applies analytic methods to non-experimental data to assess the effectiveness of potential policy interventions to reduce the overall burden of and social disparities in adverse pregnancy and childhood outcomes. \n\n\n\nA major focus of his current work is the development\, use and interpretation of statistical methods for causal mediation analysis in social epidemiology. He is adapting a variety of modeling techniques to estimate more realistic intervention effects (stochastic mediation contrasts). His approach relies heavily on the principles and concepts of causal inference\, comparative effectiveness research and implementation science. The end goal of Dr. Naimi’s research is to develop targeted actionable strategies to reduce racial disparities in preterm birth. \n\n\n\nThis lecture is hosted by the CUNY SPH Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics.

SUMMARY:CUNY SPH Grand Rounds with Dr. Nancy Krieger\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Inheritance & Health: What Really Matters for Health Equity?Considering History\, Jim Crow\, and Racialized Economic Segregation\nNancy Krieger\, PhD\nProfessor of Social Epidemiology\nHarvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health \nWhat type of inheritance truly matters for the people’s health? This question gains new urgency as genomics and precision medicine take center stage in US biomedicine\, taxes for corporations and the wealthy are slashed\, regulations and programs to protect the environment and public health are undermined\, and racism and coddling of white supremacy are evident at the highest levels of the US government. Guidance is perhaps surprisingly offered by the work of Wilhelm Johannsen\, who in 1909 coined the terms “gene\,” “genotype\,”
