Dr. Marcus Bachhuber is a physician with training in health policy and health services research. He completed his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine followed by residency and chief residency at the Montefiore Einstein Primary Care/Social Internal Medicine Residency Program. He completed a fellowship with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program at the University of Pennsylvania where he also obtained a Master’s of Science in Health Policy Research.
In addition to being a primary care provider, Dr. Bachhuber conducts research focusing on health system and policy approaches to reducing harms from substance use. He has led several studies looking at the impacts of state policies such as prescription drug monitoring programs and medical marijuana laws on opioid pain reliever misuse and overdose.
Dr. Bachhuber’s implementation science experience focuses on studying health system interventions to address substance use in “real world” settings. He recently led the evaluation of a program of nurse-delivered screening and brief intervention for unhealthy alcohol use integrated directly into primary care. He is also planning a study of modifying the electronic health record to reduce opioid analgesic prescribing for acute pain.
